If you're looking for Colorado's largest sandbox, here it is: Just 35 miles from Alamosa are the tallest sand dunes in North America.
Founded in 1878 with the extension of the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad into the San Luis Valley, the town was named for the cottonwood (alamosa) trees that lined the banks of the Rio Grande. Soon rails spread out in all directions from the community, and it became a thriving transportation center for farmers and a supply depot for miners. Farming remains important today, but Alamosa has also become an educational center with Adams State College, a 4-year institution founded in 1921. Elevation is 7,544 feet, and the population is a bit under 8,000.
