- Experienced surfers can catch some serious waves at Puerto Viejo's infamous break, Salsa Brava, where fierce winter swells tumble over the shallow reef. Less experienced surfers can find a gentle beach break at Playa Cocles.
- Just south of Puerto Viejo, the Gandoca-Manzanilla National Wildlife Refuge offers beaches and hiking trails through coastal rainforest. Hire a guide for a kayaking trip through the Gandoca Lagoon for a chance to see a rare Tucuxi dolphin plying the estuaries.
- For lounging and swimming, head to the black sands of Playa Negra. This volcanic beach lines the edge of a small bay, providing a safe place to swim. The consistently small waves are perfect for body-boarding.
