Telluride Mountain Biking Travel Tips

  • Beginners to the sport of mountain biking, or experts who need to adjust to altitude, will enjoy the popular Galloping Goose Mountain Bike Trail. The trail follows an old railroad route, and riders can go as far as 20 miles one-way. The tread is dirt, but it's smooth and not particularly technical.
  • The River Trail starts in town and transforms into a navigable singletrack. The trail forks at 1.5 miles into an Upper River Trail and a Lower River Trail. Both connect at the end so you can choose to do a balloon. Ride back to town. This ride is a good primer for new mountain bikers and for those who want to see more of Telluride.
  • Bridal Veil Falls is a moderate trail with spectacular waterfalls that you can usually see from the town of Telluride-they are better up close, of course. Bike up the road from Pandora Mill to Bridal Veil Falls and the power plant. It is a 1.8-mile, one-way ride.
  • Tomboy Road, Imogene Pass, and Ouray make up a combination of mountain bike rides that are moderate to difficult and long, but worth it. The five-mile road to Tomboy is rugged, but starts in town at the north end of Oak Street. Travel up the steep grade up to the pass and descend to Ouray. Rich with history, the Tomboy Mine has its lure, but other side trails such as Yankee Boy Basin and Camp Bird lead to other trips that are just as worthy.
