Fat Paddler
rates Thunder Bay
A small (and cold!) town to the north west of Lake Superior, it is the home to hardcore paddlers and outdoors-types of revel in the harsh Canadian winter conditions. I went in Winter and was amused by the deer that wander the streets, stopping to stare at passing cars! We did a night snow-shoe hike there in the middle of winter, which was magical if not freezing cold. Food wasn't really a highlight but there are a few local "delicacies" - Persians (a type of sticky bun) and Pierogis (a kind of dumpling, like a big ravioli that is deep-fried. Make sure you have breakfast at the "Hoito", a famous breakfast place there. It's dirt cheap and packed everyday with locals, who are more than happy to queue. Biggest fried breakfast you'll ever sit down to!
