Tent under the stars on the remote island of Amami Oshima—a quiet southern island few Japanese seem to have discovered. Head to the southern end of the island to Yadori Beach. With impeccable campgrounds and nary a tourist or hotel in sight, it's a camper's paradise. Snorkel in glass-like lagoons or bicycle through fruit and sugarcane farming communities and sample local cuisine, a unique blend of Ryukyu and mainland Japanese tastes.
