What to do in Angkor Wat

Images of Angkor Wat are everywhere in Cambodia—on the currency, the country flag, postcards, T-shirts, and even the labels of the local beer (named Angkor, naturally). And why not? Angkor Wat is one of the most important archeological sites on the planet, stretching over 154 square miles with more than 100 monuments that echo back to the Khmer Empire, which ruled for nearly five centuries. The site takes its name from the main temple, a towering marvel built for the Hindu god-king Suryavarman. But other temples, like the walled city of Angkor Thom and the overgrown jungle ruins of Ta Phrom (where parts of the movie Tomb Raider were filmed), shouldn’t be missed. You’ll be compelled to snap your own ubiquitous image of Angkor Wat, as well you should.
