Channel Islands National Park Sea Kayaking Travel Tips

Channel Islands National Park Sea Kayaking Travel Tips

By Cameron Walker
  • Santa Cruz Island offers the most spots for launching and landing. Scorpion Beach is the hub of kayak activity and has good beach access, clear waters for snorkeling, and sea caves nearby.
  • Head to Santa Barbara Island to see wildlife including harbor seals, sea lions, and elephant seals, along with colonies of cormorants and gulls. Don't look for a beach landing, though—the only place to come ashore on this cliffed-out island is Landing Cove.
  • The rough waters surrounding Santa Rosa and San Miguel islands make them destinations for experienced kayakers only.
  • Wind can be a constant challenge for kayakers. To minimize its effect on your trip, come during the calmer period from August to October, and paddle in the mornings. Anacapa and Santa Barbara islands have milder winds.
  • Much of Santa Cruz Island is protected by The Nature Conservancy. You'll need a permit to land in these areas.
