Even before the first Europeans settled in Carmel-by-the-Sea in 1771—and centuries before the town became famous for celebrities, galleries, and trendy boutiques, to say nothing of Clint Eastwood's stint as mayor—this dramatic stretch of California coastline drew people to it. Two different native cultures flourished here, and today those influences can still be found in local spa treatments that enhance body and soul, such as the Esselen-rooted purification treatment at the Spa at Pebble Beach.
