What to do in San Francisco

San Francisco’s laissez-faire atmosphere of tolerance goes back to the Gold Rush, and the city today remains an eclectic pastiche of people Siren-called to the Pacific Coast. Travelers to San Francisco will find distinctive neighborhoods and ethnic enclaves, colorful Victorian homes lining the streets in the Mission and the Haight, and one-of-a-kind boutiques that fill Hayes Valley and North Beach. The restored 1898 Ferry Building houses farmers’ markets and food halls that showcase Northern California’s agricultural bounty. The former Presidio military base has been transformed into a vast national park with attractions and 25 miles of walking and biking trails. And a new palm tree-lined waterfront promenade and restored piers are part of a 21st-century San Francisco renaissance that stretches from Golden Gate Park to the Embarcadero.

I wish we had, had more time in San Fran. We squeezed in as much as we could in one day...including walking the bridge; eating on Pier 39; saw, drove, & took pictures of the most crooked road on earth; watched Alcatraz; and accidentally got lost in Chinatown (which happens to be the largest Chinatown outside of Asia, wowzers!). We missed the Ghirardelli Factory and didn't have time to ride a cable car, but I'd say those are must-do's including seeing the famous Painted Ladies houses that was the backdrop for one of my favorite childhood shows, Full House. If you are staying outside of San Fran and driving or riding in, be sure to bring a few layers with you. I dressed for the sunny & warm weather we had 30 min away from San Fran only to have to buy jeans & a jacket because it was a blustery 50* on July 2nd.
