Los Angeles Surfing Travel Tips
- Malibu is the classic Los Angeles surf spot—three points form extremely long, clean rides. It's packed with summertime surfers, so expect to compete for waves and share them once you've caught them.
- Beginners have lots of beaches to choose from, and lots of instructors who'll help them with everything from paddling out to popping up. While the best spots to learn vary a bit with season, tide, and swell, you'll often find classes heading to Dockweiler State Beach and Will Rogers State Beach.
- Come winter, experienced surfers look for barrels at El Porto and solid lefts at the Redondo Breakwater. Big-wave surfers headed to Lunada Bay, one of California's best-known big waves, may face an extremely protective local crowd.
- The Palos Verdes Peninsula can get waves year-round but really shines in winter. Shortboarders frequent Haggertys; longboarders find their tribe at the Cove.
- Be careful surfing after a storm—many breaks have pollution issues.
- Save the boardshorts for summer; in winter, a 3/2 wetsuit and booties will make your session much more pleasant.
