Los Angeles Sailing Travel Tips
- The Santa Monica Bay is known as a pleasant sailing destination, with plenty of things to see—from the Santa Monica Pier to humpback, fin, and blue whales—and relatively tame waters.
- Marina del Rey, one of the sailing centers of the Los Angeles area, is just minutes from the Los Angeles airport—you won't have to wait too long between grabbing your suitcase from baggage claim and setting sail.
- Many yacht clubs have a home at Marina del Rey and in Long Beach. If you belong to a yacht club at home, check to see if you have reciprocal privileges with a Los Angeles-area club. There are even cooperative and low-cost clubs that may be offering open houses, free sailing excursions, or other events during your stay.
- If you'd like to learn to sail, many outfitters offer instruction for both beginners and more experienced sailors. Want to get the boating experience and still be able to take in the scenery? Charter a yacht for a sunset cruise, a coastal exploration, or a longer trip to Catalina Island.
- If you are arriving by boat, the availability of guest slips varies, and each harbor has different policies when it comes to reservations, mooring, and the like. Your best bet is to do a little research in advance.
- Winter brings extreme low tides—check a tide table and educate yourself about potentially hazardous areas.
