The desert oasis of Palm Springs has long been a retreat of the rich and famous, but in recent years it has morphed into a shoppers’ paradise of sorts. Uptown Palm Springs is the epicenter of designer resale, where the Design District houses a dozen or more shops that specialize in everything from slightly used contemporary haute couture to retro ash trays, vintage sequined dresses, and an eclectic assortment of art and antiques worthy of Hollywood’s second home. (PS is also infamous as the paparazzi-free getaway of choice for some R&R after plastic surgery.) If you’re not in the market for an avocado and gold couch, you can explore the greater Palm Springs area of the Coachella Valley; its claim to fame is a three-day music festival frequented by wannabe Hollywood hippies and top bands.
