What to do in Rio de Janeiro

Rio de Janeiro is the perfect combination of landscape and culture—a city of mountains built on the sea with European, African, and American influences distilled into a uniquely Brazilian flavor. From atop the city’s most striking landmark, the Corcovado (Christ the Redeemer), Rio sprawls into a carpet of skyscrapers, high-rise apartments, and favelas (Portuguese for neighborhoods) nestled among Rio’s peaks. Back at sea level, no two neighborhoods are alike. Hit the local beach or shop in Ipanema, the city’s poshest area. Or rent a bike in nearby Lagoa for a sunset cruise. At night, explore Lapa, known for its sizzling samba clubs. Bohemian Santa Teresa hosts a popular Saturday market. And just a short drive away, in Tijuca National Park (home of the Corcovado), you’ll find a diverse rainforest ecosystem with plenty of fresh air.
