What to do in Black Moshannon State Park

Black Moshannon encompasses 3,394 acres including a 250 acre lake. The park is nestled in the Moshannon State Forest land.

The high altitude of the lake and wetlands provides cool summer days and excellent winter activity conditions. Also, plants and animals normally seen farther north can be found here because cool, wet conditions create the right habitat.

The Civilian Conservation Corps and the Works Progress Administration created much of the park development during the 1930's. Black Moshannon State Park is an outdoor enthusiast's haven. The park offers boating, warm water fishing, hiking, family camping, cabins, group camping, hunting, picnicking, environmental education program, ice fishing, ice skating, snowmobiling, cross-country skiing and mountain biking.

The name Moshannon is a native American name meaning Moose Stream because of the stream that runs through the park. The park is located high on top of the Allegheny Front. The underlying sandstone being close to the surface here, creates wetland environments.
