Locate 16.5 miles north from Bridgeport, the Burt Canyon trail makes a great backpacking trip or a very long day hike.

The major destination for people using the Burt Canyon Trail is Anna Lake. There are several peaks that are accessible from this trail including Anna Peak (11,148'), Flatiron Butte, and Ink Rocks. The trail is moderately strenuous and the 1.7 miles to Anna Lake is very strenuous. The trail starts out as a road with an intermediate slope on the sides of the road there is an abundance of giant Sierra Western Junipers and huge Jeffery Pines. Burt Canyon is a must see for spring and summer wildflowers. After about 2 miles the road ends and to your left you will see a sign with wilderness information. If you are going to be camping over night in this area make sure to pick up a permit at the Bridgeport Ranger Station. The trail takes you through areas of sage brush and then through groves of aspen, followed by forested areas, and into beautiful, high elevation meadows. After a few miles you will see the Anna Lake Junction. This trail is a steep with several sets of switchbacks, it is easy to lose this section of the trail. Due to its high elevation the Anna Lake trail is often snow covered late into the summer. Anna Lake is at 10,500 ft and may remain frozen for most of the year. A trip to Anna Lake makes a great backpacking trip or a very long day hike. Anna Lake contains golden trout a fish sought after in the high Sierra and the non-angler could spend days exploring the area around the lake. Livestock may be grazing in the meadows below Anna Lake. Make sure to bring plenty of water sections of the trail are hot and exposed.

Directions: From Bridgeport, CA, Drive north on U.S. Highway 395 toward Obsidian Campground the turnoff is about 16.5 miles north of Bridgeport. Once you have reached this turnoff you will drive on a well maintained dirt road for about 3 miles. Continue past the Obsidian Campground, around the next corner you will see the trailhead parking.
