This trail begins on Glacier Point Road and leads southward into the Bridalveil Creek drainage. This trail is easy, but long. It makes a good weekend backpacking excursion.
Begin the hike from the Ostrander Lake Trail along Glacier Point Road. Walk southward from the trailhead, crossing a small stream at one-third of a mile from the trailhead. The trail continues south toward Bridalveil Creek for one and a half miles to a trail junction. The trail to the right leads to Bridalveil Creek then Bridalveil Creek Trail. Bear left at this junction and parallel the eastern bank of the creek for one mile.
At two and a half miles from the trailhead lies a junction. Again, the right spur crosses Bridalveil Creek and connects to Bridalveil Creek Trail. Follow the trail to the left.
Ostrander Lake Trail leaves the creek and begins to ascend. After about one half mile from the second trail junction the trail turns sharply southward and begins to parallel a smaller stream. The route ascends in and out of forested areas to the summit of Horizon Ridge. It reaches a high point of 8,600 feet then begins a short descent of a half mile to the northern shore of Ostrander Lake.
A loop hike can be created by continuing past the eastern shores of the lake walking southward. Hikers should reach a pond, which lies southeast of Ostrander Lake, and head eastward toward Hart Lakes. Horse Ridge lies south of this route and the trail nears the northern most portion of the ridge, which lies at 9,000 feet. Skirting the northern slopes of the ridge pass along the northern shore of Hart Lakes and turn northward. Edson Lake should be in view from this point. Descend the ridge paralleling the northern shore of a small drainage. This will lead you to the Buena Vista Trail, on which you hike north. It's approximately two miles to traverse from Ostrander Lake to Buena Vista Trail.
Hiking north on Buena Vista Trail it is approximately seven miles to the Mono Meadow Trail junction. At this junction turn left and hike three easy miles to Glacier Point Road. It is less than one and a half miles west along Glacier Point Road to the Ostrander Lake Trailhead.
Directions: From Arch Rock Entrance, Follow Highway 140 into the Yosemite Valley and bear right on to Southside Drive. Travel approximately one mile eastward and turn right on to Wawona Road (Highway 41). Follow Wawona Road nine miles to Glacier Point Road and turn left. Drive nine miles on Glacier Point Road to Ostrander Lake Trailhead on the right side of the road.
