This trail to Mono Pass begins in Dana Meadows along Tioga Road. The trailhead consists of a parking area on the south side of the road approximately a mile and a half west from Tioga Pass. The trail follows a path established by Native Americans, that was later used for mining activity. Cabins in various stages of decline represent the mining era of the late nineteenth century. Near the pass are five reconstructed cabins in the midst of other mining debris.
The hike begins by leading southeastward from Tioga Road through Dana Meadows. It crosses the Dana Fork of the Tuolumne River in the first quarter mile of tread. One half mile from the trailhead is a junction. The left side of the fork leads to Mono Pass. The right side follows the Dana Fork westward to Tuolumne Meadows.
Approximately one mile from the trailhead you'll reach Parker Creek. The trail leads along the eastern bank of this creek for nearly a mile. At this point Mammoth Peak is visible to the right as the northern end of Kuna Crest.
Slightly more than two miles from Tioga Road the trail reaches another fork. The right side of this fork leads to Spillway Lake following Parker Creek. The left side will lead to Mono Pass. Shortly beyond this junction the trail to Mono Pass begins to gain elevation. In the next mile the trail gains 600 feet and reaches another junction. Again, follow the left side of the fork to Mono Pass. The right side leads two miles to Parker Pass.
The trail levels after this junction for a quarter mile to the pass summit, which is 10,604 feet. Immediately before reaching the summit you'll pass Summit Lake. A non distinct trail leads southward from the eastern shore of Summit Lake to an abandoned mine site. Take this trail to view the mine, its tailings pile and five restored cabins.
Directions: From Tuolumne Meadows, Travel eastward on Tioga Road nearly six miles to the Mono Trail parking area on the south side of the road.
