This trail is different from most in the national park because it leads to an open meadow.

Calf Mountain is a great hike if you are looking for open space for picnicking or bird watching. The 1-mile round-trip hike leads to an open meadow rather than deep woodlands. This is probably not a hike you want to make in the middle of a hot humid day. However, the open meadow next to wilderness is a great place for observing songbirds. You will also want to note the lush blueberry bushes growing along side the path.

Directions: From Front Royal, VA, Skyline Drive travels the entire length of Shenandoah National Park. Mile markers are placed along the right-hand side of the road heading south. They are numbered from north to south beginning at the northern terminus in Front Royal, Virginia. Facilities, trails and park features use the mile markers as points of reference. At mile 99.5, park in the Beagle Gap parking area located on the east side of the Drive. Begin on the Appalachian Trail until you see the trail post for Calf Mountain.
