The hike to J.O. Pass is a moderate hike that can be accessed from Lodgepole Campground, in Sequoia National Park, and from fox Meadow Trailhead, in Kings Canyon National Park. The trail begins from Fox Meadow Trailhead a short distance east of the Big Meadows Forest Service campground. The trail is well signed for Weaver Lake. The trail to J.O. Pass via Jennie Lake shares the same path for the first half mile. When the trails split take the right side of the fork.
The trail soon enters the Jennie Lakes Wilderness, leading southward and ascending steadily. It enters and crosses Poison Meadow and begins traversing the southern flanks of Shell Mountain. Approximately two and a half miles from Poison Meadow the trail reaches Poop Out Pass, elevation 9,150 feet.
From the pass it is about one mile, and a slight descent, to Jennie Lake. The trail reaches the northern shore of Jennie Lake, where it fills Boulder Creek. The lake lies five and a half miles from the trailhead. A spur trail leads to the lake. The main trail continues southeastward another two miles to J.O. Pass, gaining 415 feet in the process.
To return to the Fox Meadow Trailhead hike north from J.O. Pass approximately two miles to the Weaver Lake Trail junction. Turn left on to Weaver Lake Trail and follow it back to Fox Meadow. and Twin Lakes, 9 miles from the trailhead. The first campsite is located at Rowell Meadow, 2 miles in from the trailhead.
Directions: From Big Stump Entrance, Travel northward on Highway 180 to Generals Highway. Turn right on Generals Highway and drive 7 miles to Forest Service Road 14S11. Turn left on this road and travel four miles passing Big Meadows Campground. A short distance past the campground bear right on a dirt road and drive one half mile. Turn left at a fork in the road then make a quick right. Follow the road one mile to the Fox Meadow Trailhead.
