The Colonel Bob Trail gains over 4,200 feet in 7.2 miles to the summit of Colonel Bob. Mukley Trail Shelter is four miles from the trailhead; the junction with Pete's Creek Trail #858 is a mile and a half farther. The trail ascends through old-growth conifer forest with a lush understory of rainforest vegetation and leads to panoramic views of Quinault Lake.

  • Primitive camping space is available at the Mulkey Shelter and at Moonshine Flats. Plan to treat your drinking water and pack out whatever you pack in.
  • An overnight trip is the best way to hike the entire trail. The lower stretch of trail, though, makes for excellent day hiking. The trail is well-maintained.
