The trail to Jakey Lake is six miles round trip with a steep ascent of 400 feet on the return. You'll find few fellow hikers on the trail.

The trail leading to Jakey Lake begins from the Juniper Lake Ranger Station. The route leads north then west with a total mileage of six and a half miles round trip. The 600 foot elevation gain to reach this small lake often deters visitors from making the trip, therefore promising more pristine scene when you reach the area.

From the Juniper Lake Ranger Station parking area follow the dirt road westward along the northern edge of Juniper Lake. Pass the private cabins along this stretch, shortly west of them you'll reach a trail junction. Turn right at this junction, which leads northward to Snag Lake.

Upon turning northward the trail ascends out of the lake basin. In the next half mile the route gains 240 feet to the crest of a ridge. The trail crosses the ridge then descends slightly more steeply into the Grassy Creek drainage.

Approximately one and a half miles from the trailhead this route reaches a trail junction. Turn right (east) to reach Jakey Lake. From this junction the trail ascends steadily through meadows, past ponds and over the outlet stream from Jakey Lake. In the next one and a half miles the trail ascends 460 feet.

In the basin with Jakey Lake are several other small water bodies. By continuing along the trail beyond the lake you can visit several of these small lakes. A non distinct use trail circles the lake and provides access to swimming areas. To return to the trailhead retrace your steps. Be prepared for a moderately steep 440 foot ascent on the return trip.

Directions: From Chester, Drive eastward on Highway 36 to Chester Valley Road. Turn left on this road and travel one mile to Juniper Lake Road. Turn right on Juniper Lake Road and drive northward. The road turns to dirt 7.5 miles before reaching the campground. Pass the campground and continue northward 2 miles to the trailhead by the ranger station.
