This trail leads one half miles from Highway 89 to Forest Lake. It gains approximately 820 feet.

This trail follows the same path as the Brokeoff Mountain Trail one and a half miles from the trailhead. This trail veers from the main path and leads to Forest Lake, which lies below the eastern slopes of Brokeoff Mountain. This trail provides good opportunities to view Brokeoff Mountain, identify wildflowers and enjoy a swim.

The trail begins along Highway 89 at the parking area on the eastern side of the road. Cross the road to the trailhead. The route begins by ascending immediately. Within the first quarter mile of the hike you'll cross a tributary of West Sulphur Creek. The trail turns westward after the stream crossing then parallels the waterway for a short distance. The trail turns and crosses to the other side of the stream, then makes two other stream crossings in the next two tenths of a mile. Between these crossings the trail gradient lessens.

After the fourth stream crossing the trail parallels the outlet stream of Forest Lake on its northern bank. During the next .7 miles the trail remains on the northern bank of the stream and gains approximately 480 feet. After this stretch the trail turns westward and crosses the stream at an elevation of 7,400 feet. At this point hikers who've chosen to make their destination Forest Lake should look for a non distinct trail leading to the right. If you cross the stream you've gone too far.

The stream you've been paralleling for the last .7 miles leads to Forest Lake. The trail lies along the eastern bank of the outlet stream. It is less than a half mile to the lake from this fork in the trail. The route to the lake is relatively level gaining only 50 feet from the trail junction to the lake shore.

Directions: From Southwest Entrance, Drive .25 miles south from the entrance station to the trailhead parking on the eastern side of the road. Hikers are expected to pay the entrance fee for Lassen National Park before using this trail.
