This trail begins along the Sliding Sands Trail, approximately two miles east of the Haleakala visitor center. It leads northward a half mile climbing along the flanks of the Kalua O Ka Oo cinder cone. This cinder cone is the furthest west in the Haleakala Crater. The return trip on the Sliding Sands Trail is a 1,600 foot ascent, so be sure to bring plenty of water, especially if you're visiting on a warm summer day.
Directions: From Sliding Sands Trail, Park in the visitor center parking lot and follow the Sliding Sands Trail from the eastern side of the parking area. Follow the Sliding Sands Trail for two miles, where the Kalua O Ka Oo Trail will lead to the left.
