Kaupo Trail is best left to intermediate and expert hikers. The challenging route, which begins atop Kaupo Gap, dips 6,100 feet in 8.7 miles. The path veers left off the jeep road six miles from the trailhead, declining sharply through alien guava and Christmas berry thickets. Trees are few and far between, there is no water, and conditions can become increasingly uncomfortable in the afternoon heat.
