There are a never-ending variety of natural wonders in this enormous park, including the eerie floor of the crater and the magical Kipahulu Valley, much of which is closed to tourists. A seven-day pass is $5 or $10 per vehicle. Explore Haleakala with an experienced guide or stick with the established trails. Weather conditions can change drastically at the summit. Bring food, water and proper clothing for every member of the group if you plan on hiking.

Hikers will find easy to challenging trails in the summit area.
The park features rocky coastline, verdant tropical forests, and rare plant and wildlife. Access the coastal Kipahula area ten miles past Hana on famous Hana Road (a destination in itself).
Because Haleakala is an area of extremes in terms of elevation, topography, and climate, take time to visit the park's Web site. There's lots of good information about weather, services, and park programs.

Haleakala is so much more than the summit, but you just can't visit Maui without ascending to the top of this mountain by one means or another. People hike, bike, drive, and even fly to the crater's edge. However they arrive, those who make the effort find a place of unimaginable beauty and humbling power.
