Kephart Prong Trail is located north of US 441 / Newfound Gap Road before the road makes two dramatic switchbacks. The trail heads north along the Kephart Prong offering the Kephart Shelter and access to other trails and primitive campsites. This is a good day hike that is slightly challenging because it ascends almost 8 feet. Trail begins across the Oconaluftee River bridge on the north side of the road.
Directions: From Cherokee, NC, Travel US 411 north which turns into Newfound Gap Road. The trail begins along the Kephart Prong on the north side of the road before the drastic switchbacks. There is a bridge over the Oconaluftee River at the trailhead.
