The biological diversity of the Smokies can be well appreciated on this 12.4-mile trek, which follows lush Deep Creek to Indian Creek and passes Indian Creek Falls to climb to Martins Gap. The return trip, via the quiet Sunkota Ridge Trail, winds through drier-type forest back to Deep Creek and its accompanying riverine habitat.

  • Start your hike early to allow plenty of time, even though the climbs aren't terribly steep, you are in the Smoky Mountains.
  • Bring your camera to photograph Indian Creek Falls, which is best enjoyed in spring, when Indian Creek is running full.
  • Watch for pioneer homesites during the hike. Look for flats, smaller trees, and relics such as chimneys, piled stones, or old wash tubs.
