Instead, join a 2.5-hour guided tour with Bright Angel Bicycle Rentals, traveling 5.6 miles along scenic Hermit Road, the park's best option for riding. This route—closed to most vehicular traffic—hugs the South Rim and includes some of the best viewpoints, becoming progressively less crowded as you head west. The last 2.8 miles follow the Greenway Trail bike path, and the trip ends at Hermit's Rest, the breathtaking westernmost viewpoint built around a charmingly ramshackle structure designed by Southwest architect Mary Colter in 1914.
