On this drive you'll see some of the North Rim's most spectacular scenery and attain the highest vantage point in the park that’s reachable by road. Stops to admire the views and a few short hikes will easily fill a day. Water and picnic fixings come in handy as no services exist along the drive. From the junction 3 miles north of Grand Canyon Lodge, turn east 5.3 miles on the drive to the Point Imperial turnoff, then turn left 2.7 miles to Point Imperial for a sweeping vista of the upper Grand Canyon from an elevation of 8,803 feet. The canyon of the Little Colorado River lies to the southeast, the Painted Desert to the east, and Navajo Mountain in Utah to the northeast. Back on Cape Royal drive, you'll pass overlooks on the left and a prehistoric pueblo on the right. At road's end, a paved level trail just 0.3 mile long continues out to Cape Royal. On the way you’ll pass the huge Angels Window; a side trail leads out on its top. At Cape Royal a vast swath of Grand Canyon comes into view; signs identify Wotans Throne, Freya Castle, and other colorfully named buttes.
