- It takes a lot of time and patience to drive to Eureka Dunes, but as soon as you spot those great icons of the desert, you'll know why you came. The tallest sand dunes in California, Eureka Dunes rise nearly 700 feet from their base, creating a sandy, miniature mountain range that is home to several rare and endangered desert plants.
- The drive from Furnace Creek to Eureka Dunes is nearly 100 miles, almost half of it on dirt roads. Check on road conditions at the Furnace Creek Visitor Center before heading out; a high-clearance vehicle is often necessary. The road may be impassable after a period of rain.
- Because of the continually shifting desert sands, there is no marked trail to the top of the dunes. From the parking area, just make a beeline for the summit of the tallest dune you can see, then trace a ridgeline path from dune to dune. Climbing the sandy dunes is a slow proposition; you'll take two steps forward, then slide one step back.
