Beginning at the trail junction with the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail #2000 to the south, the Sky Lakes Trail crosses a relatively level plateau north of Imagination Peak before winding between the sparkling lakes in the heart of the Sky Lakes Basin. The trail is a popular "detour" route for travelers along the Pacific Crest Trail seeking water sources. Although the connecting trail at the northern end, the Snow Lakes Trail, is not maintained for stock users, the Divide Trail provides Pacific Crest Trail access for visitors with stock. The wet meadows and lakeshores along the Sky Lakes Trail require the practice of minimum impact visitation for preservation.
