Slaughter Canyon Cave, discovered in 1937, is 23 miles from the Carlsbad Canyon Visitor's Center and open for guided tours only (25 people per tour, twice daily in summer). There are good views of bizarre formations, but it is not improved like the main caverns.
A half-mile hike from the parking leads to the cave entrance, where tours begin. Wear sturdy boots, and bring a flashlight and water. Reservations are mandatory. Phone 800-967-2283.
