The Frying Pan Trail leads along the ridge of Capitol Reef, paralleling Scenic Drive. It can be accessed from Highway 24 via Cohab Canyon, Scenic Drive via Cohab Canyon Trail and Grand Wash via Cassidy Arch Trail. The route is generally three miles one way with approximately an 1,100-foot gain in elevation.
Beginning this hike from Scenic Drive at the Cohab Canyon Trailhead means an initial ascent of approximately 550 feet. Once the initial climb is complete the trail levels as it reaches Cohab Canyon. Follow the trail a short distance through the canyon to a trail intersection. At this intersection Frying Pan Trail leads southward (right).
Once on the Frying Pan Trail the ascent resumes. The track climbs to the top of Capitol Reef gaining approximately 600 more feet in the next mile. Once on the ridge top it parallels Scenic Drive for slightly less than a mile before turning eastward. This turn follows the northern wall of Grand Wash and shortly after making it Frying Pan Trail ends at Cassidy Arch Trail.
Directions: From Capitol Reef National Park, Fruita Campground Access: Drive southward on Scenic Drive to the trailhead immediately north of the campground. Follow Cohab Canyon Trail one mile to a trail junction. Frying Pan Trail leads right from this junction.
