The Fremont Gorge Trail crosses Johnson Mesa, then climbs steeply 1,000 feet to an overlook above the Fremont River. The route begins at an easy grade then becomes strenuous as it climbs westward. The trail extends two and quarter miles one way. It provides panoramic views eastward to Capitol Reef and makes a great early morning trek to view the sunrise.
Begin this hike from the Blacksmith Shop along Scenic Drive a short distance south of the visitor center. The trail crosses a ridge into the Fremont River valley then turns sharply westward. From here the trail climbs steadily for a quarter mile then levels slightly then begins a steeper ascent. The route is rocky and exposed to the sun so sunscreen, water and a hat are necessary.
Directions: From Capitol Reef National Park, Drive southward on the Scenic Drive less than one mile to the Blacksmith Shop.
