On this 3.5-mile loop trail, you'll have a fine panorama of Capitol Reef and get a close look at local geology. The trail climbs 540 feet to a lofty viewpoint that overlooks Chimney Rock, a spire of dark red Moenkopi Formation capped by a block of the harder Shinarump Member of the Chinle Formation. Petrified wood along the trail has weathered from the Chinle Formation—the same rock layer that has been so prolific in Arizona's Petrified Forest National Park.

  • Hiking time is about 2.5 hours.
  • So that future visitors will enjoy seeing petrified wood, rangers are very strict about the "no collecting" rule!
