In 1948, Sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski began carving Crazy Horse Memorial, when Lakota Chief Henry Standing Bear requested a tribute to the legendary war leader. The sculpture is a work in progress, which continued after Korczak's death in 1982. Educational and cultural attractions such as the Indian Museum of North America, the Native American Educational and Cultural Center, and the sculptor's log home studio are part of the Memorial's Visitor Center.
