Saddle Trail is a popular well traveled mountain route.

Saddle Trail begins from the mountain campground of Chimney Pond. Several trails begin from the ranger's cabin and Saddle Trail the one that heads northwest. The trail leaves the basin at approximately 2,910 elevation and reaches Baxter Peak at 5,267 feet. The grade along Saddle Trail is the easiest choice for reaching the Peak. Gentle grades and minor loose rocks are negotiated along the cairn marked path. The trail traverses through a mixture of hardwood and pine and open tablelands. At 1.2 miles, you will be at a midway point between Hamlin Peak and Baxter Peak. If you turn right, you will enter another network of trails along the northern slope. You may want to head north for a very short distance and obtain water from Saddle Spring. The spring is off a well-marked spur trail. Heading back south on Saddle Spring, you will come to the junction of Cathedral Cutoff Trail. Traveling on, you will then come to the intersection of Cathedral Trail on your left and Baxter Peak Cutoff Trail on your right. It descends to Hunt and Abot Trails along with Thoreau Spring. Continuing straight takes you to Baxter Peak at 2.2 miles. You may retrace your steps to the campground or descend on Hunt Trail to Park Tote Road or take the daring Knife Edge to Dudley Trail and then back to the campground. Note: Knife Edge is an exceedingly challenging trail and caution should be heeded.

Directions: From Millinocket, ME, Travel approximately 15 miles north on SR 11 to reach the Togue Pond Gate. Bear right and travel about 8 miles to the Roaring Brook Campground. Begin on Chimney Pond Trail from beside the ranger's cabin. Hike approximately 3 miles to Chimney Pond Campground. Begin on the well-worn path by the ranger's mountain cabin.
