The trail gets its name from the Wabanaki Indians who knew Mount Desert Island as Pemetic, "the sloping land." Pemetic Mountain is Mount Desert's fourth highest point offering views of more than two dozen points of interest including Schoodic Mountain on Schoodic Peninsula, Mt. Champlain on Isle au Haut, Cranberry Isles, Frenchman Bay and much more. The blue-blazed trail is fairly easy, however, their are steep rocks and a few boulders to negotiate. The trail is characterized by running streams and damp moss-floored forests. At about .3 mile, the trail opens to views of Eagle Lake, Cranberry Isles, Jordan Pond and Jordan Pond Gatehouse. The views and points of interest become more apparent and panoramic as you proceed. You'll be able to see Seal Harbor, Little Long Pond, Northeast Harbor, the Triad and Day Mountain. The trail becomes steeper once again, and you'll have to negotiate more large rocks and boulders. At the summit, you'll reach a cairn where you can look down upon Bubble Pond. Cadillac Mountain is the backdrop. Looking to the south, you'll be able to see the Atlantic Ocean. Retrace your steps for a different perspective of the landmarks and to reach the trailhead.
Directions: From Bar Harbor, ME, Travel the Park Loop Road to approximately .5 mile north of Jordan Pond Gatehouse. The trail begins on the west side of the road in the Jordan House parking lot.
Elevation: 1,248 feet
