Just before sunset, hundreds of fiery red birds fill the sky above Caroni swamp. Except for the black beak and tip of its wings, the Scarlet Ibis is bright orangey-red and flies in squadrons, settling atop the trees that frame the water. Bird lovers travel to the sanctuary just to witness this flight, which is best appreciated by boat. Most tours set out on the mangrove-laced waterways late afternoon, as caimans, snowy white egrets, and blue heron peek down from their perches.
