There are lots of compelling reasons for a family visit to Rainbow Springs Nature Park, which is spread over 22 acres of parkland. First off, there is the space for little legs to run off steam among the native fauna and flora. Then, of course, there is the wildlife itself. Myriad species of birds call Rainbow Springs home. Young and old alike are enthralled by the colorful parakeets and the kakariki, kea, and kaka parrots, as well as various ducks. The Kiwi Encounter is a big draw for most visitors. Kiwis are nocturnal, and their enclosure is designed to mimic natural conditions as much as possible, which can make them difficult to see at times. Alongside the kiwis, the park's most popular residents are the tuatara, whose lineage goes back a whopping 225 million years. A visit to the nature park can also be educational as the kids learn about the various animals that have been introduced to New Zealand over the centuries.
