The Chumbe Island Coral Park is a special Marine Protected Area with a totally preserved and untouched reef. The isle itself is home to an ecolodge, an historic 1904 lighthouse, and an old mosque, but you don't need to be headquartered on Chumbe itself to enjoy the reef. Motorized boat day trips from the nearby island of Zanzibar are available through Fisherman Tours & Travel. The reef is an uninterrupted coral garden stretching from the shallow beach to a drop-off about 50 feet deep teeming with thousands of colorful critters (including spiny lobsters, turtles, and dolphins), with some of the highest diversity found anywhere along the East African Coast. The tour also takes you on the island's special nature trails to see the myriad birds of the isle, plus you have plenty of time to lounge around on the empty beaches.
