About 12 miles off the coastline of Perth and accessible via ferry, this unique isle of 300 inhabitants does not allow cars or private ownership of land and has been a popular holiday destination since the early 1900s. Rotto (as it's known locally) is home to 63 sheltered beaches that are uncrowded despite the island's day-trip popularity. Most visitors rent bicycles to tool around the island, go crawfish diving, surf on one of the isle's breaks, snorkel in the clear waters, or try to get up-close and personal with a quokka, one of the resident wallabies found only on Rottnest. The island is also chockfull of history, having been a World War II internment camp and an Aboriginal prison.
