Long recognized as the main—some say the only—lesbian hangout in Melbourne, "the Glassy" is a large, converted brick house on a quiet street. Though it offers an Australian menu for lunch and dinner seven days a week, it's open till 5:00 a.m. and most women go for the parties on the dance floor that spill over into the courtyard (beer garden). The crowd tends to be laid back, between 20 and 40 years old, and about 95 percent women. Monthly women's gatherings include drag king shows; Play Like a Girl sessions for women musicians; Tough Muff, with themes such as cowboy and moustache; and F.L.I.R.T., featuring horror and vampire motifs.
