Located on the Atlantic City Boardwalk opposite the Trump Taj Mahal Hotel Casino, Steel Pier amusement park has been entertaining visitors for more than 100 years. The park opened in 1898 and reached its height of popularity in the mid-1900s, showcasing some of the most famous performers in the world, including Charlie Chaplin, the Three Stooges, Bob Hope, Frank Sinatra, Guy Lombardo, and Amos 'n' Andy. Once the site of the Miss America Pageant, Steel Pier fell into disrepair in the later years of the century and was nearly destroyed in a 1982 fire before being restored by Donald Trump. It was bought in 1993 by the Catanoso brothers, who reopened 14 rides and brought back to life the famous Diving Horse act, in which a horse jumps into a pool of water. Today, Steel Pier is home to a number of thrilling rides, including Kite Flier, Double Decker Carousel, Chopper Train, Balloon Race, and Crazy Mouse Coaster. The Rocket—voted New Jersey's Most Extreme Ride six years in a row (from 2001 to 2006)—propels riders 225 feet in the air at more than 100 miles per hour. The pier is open daily in the summer and on weekends in the spring and fall.
