In preparation for its centennial events in 2009, Tel Aviv gave out a big present to its lively gay community in the form of a new community center, and thus became one of the first cities in the world to finance a municipal LGBT center. The Bauhaus building, dating back to the '30s, stands in the margins of Meir Park, in which a memorial monument for gays and lesbians persecuted during the Holocaust will soon be built. On weekdays, the center hosts various social groups, from the gay youth movement to transsexuals, and a gallery presents works of local artists and there's also a performance hall. A wide range of activities is offered, including a gay yoga class and gay yacht skippers' courses!
