This tiny museum houses a fascinating collection of photos, paintings, and other memorabilia about gay life in Germany, including the history of homosexuals in the Holocaust. It presents temporary exhibits about famous gay Germans and local gay artists. Nineteen years ago, the museum first opened its doors, and while a permanent exhibition was envisioned from the start, it has only just now been installed. The new display covers nearly two centuries of social change with many highs and lows between 1800 and 1970. The historic foundations of contemporary gay pride and self-understanding are revealed by tracing the gradual acceptance of gay life in Europe through many centuries of trials and tribulations. The permanent exhibit also focuses on gay life, particularly in Berlin. It’s a must-see.
