This challenging route weaves across the undulating slickrock just east of Moab. A 2.2-mile practice loop near the start helps beginners get a feel for riding on sandstone. White dashes mark the trail, helping riders avoid getting lost or veering too close to cliffs. Black diamonds painted on the dashes warn of difficult sections ahead. Most riders take about five hours for the 9.6-mile main loop and will have to some walking. Side trails lead out to viewpoints over the Colorado River and arms of Negro Bill Canyon. Vistas of surrounding canyon country and the La Sal Mountains often reveal themselves. From the intersection of Mill Creek Drive and Sand Flats Road in Moab, drive 2.3 miles east and north on Sand Flats Road.

  • Motorcyclists laid out the original loop, though now it's ridden almost exclusively by mountain bikers.
  • Novices will have an easier time on other trails in the area. Local bookstores carry maps and trail guides.
  • Summer is awfully hot unless you ride in the early morning, and winters can be freezing cold. Spring (mid-March to late May) and autumn (mid-September to October) are the best times to ride.
