Kaumana Caves (Ben Sumner)
Formed from the lava flow of the eruption of Mauna Loa in 1881, Kaumana Cave stretches for almost 25 miles, with an explorable opening at two miles long. A concrete staircase leads through the old skylight down to the entrance to the cave, which is overgrown with plants due to abundant rain.

  • Local legend says that the 1881 lava flow that formed this cave stopped within 1 1/2 miles of Hilo due to the intervention of Princess Ruth Ke'elikolani. She camped in front of the flowing lava and prayed to the volcano goddess Pele to spare the city. Hilo was spared.
  • Bring a flashlight and sturdy shoes.

From downtown Hilo, turn left of Waianuenue Avenue. Just past Mile Marker #1 bear left onto Kaumana Drive (a.k.a. Saddle Road). Kaumana Cave is located on the right just past Mile Marker #4.
