The Acker Divide Trail passes through park like stands of old growth timber. The most impressive old growth lies along the trail from the trailhead to Grasshopper Meadows and around the Cripple Camp Shelter area. The shelter at Cripple Camp was built in the 1930's and is typical of the primitive construction style of that time. Just beyond Cripple Camp is Toad Lake, a marshy opening which provides good opportunities for wildlife observation.
Near the end, the trail leaves the timber and passes through Pup Prairie, a large meadow typical of the Divide's high country. A 1/2 mile hike up Forest Service Road #6515-530 from the trail's end leads to Hershberger Lookout where the visitor is rewarded with a spectacular view of the Southern Oregon Cascades, the Rogue and Umpqua River drainages, the Siskiyou Mountains, and Mt. Shasta.
Directions: From Tiller, Travel northeast on County Road 46 which becomes South Umpqua Road #28. Continue on 28 to Jackson Creek Road #29. Follow Road #29 to Road #2900-550 and follow #2900-550 to the Acker Divide Trailhead. This Trailhead is undeveloped with parking available for two to four vehicles, and two with trailers. Facilities include trail information board and trail sign. The trail is approximately 31 miles from Tiller.
