The Las Ramblas District runs from the port to the center of town, stopping just a few blocks short of the gay village. It's a kilometer-long, tree-lined pedestrian mall in the Barri Gòtic, connecting the Plaça de Catalunya in the center with the Christopher Columbus monument at Port Vell. Full of street performers, cafés, and market stalls, Las Ramblas serves as the hub of Barcelona. Officially, Las Ramblas consists of a series of shorter streets with different names, and together each "rambla" makes up the plural form Las Ramblas. From the Plaça de Catalunya toward the harbor, the street is successively the Rambla de Canaletes, the Rambla dels Estudis, the Rambla de Sant Josep, the Rambla dels Caputxins, and the Rambla de Santa Monica. Like its name, Las Ramblas is made for rambling, strolling, and doing what Barcelona does best: showing off its finery and looking at what others are displaying. Like Paris, Barcelona is a very style-conscious city, and walking Las Ramblas is a great way to get acquainted with the look and feel of the city. It's also very, very cruisy, but as with many cruisy spots, watch out for pickpockets. (-) Close
